Whispered Secrets and Kisses from Mother Make Nothing Better

I was starting to work on the Best Reads of the Week this evening but I'm just having a hell of a time concentrating on the project today. Normally when I start working on it I can just breeze through because there's been so much worth reading throughout the week, but honestly, this week has been a real fuck fest. I keep muddling through each day hoping that it'll be better than the day before but it's just been crap. I keep starting and stopping a series of posts I've been working on because I just don't have the interest in them this week - even though I've convinced myself that they'll be fucking great once I can get going.

Enough of my bitching. What's new with you kids?

  1. I took the leaking tire to the tire shop and had it professionally patched for $20.

And I hope you're off the mountain and your car is working now. :)

    1. Made it down this evening. On that front, all is well with the world - for now. :)

  2. The trick is not to mind the pain.

I was thinking of leaving you with that movie quote but instead I want to push for a little more. Finish your post and good or bad you have it under your belt, and the truth is you never know. You don't know if you have just written crap you hate or something you reread later and think, goddamn that was good, how the hell did I write that. But probably you will just post and forget about it till someone either gives you a big sloppy wet kiss or takes you by the collar and rubs your nose in it.

I just know that I find life better when I've done something with it, even if that something is just recovering from going that little bit too far.

  3. I may have had a (new?) breakthrough in my settlement system. After reading a random article about the Individual Versus The Group and another random article about number theory discussing Group Dynamics, it occurred to me that I could use the same system representing a small group of people (say, an adventuring party) to model a large group of people (a village, a kingdom, a plane of existence), and that it came down to a matter of scale.

I've been trying to put the thing into a blog post for a couple days but I haven't even wrapped my own head around it yet -- so it's been like smashing my forehead against a wall. Very frustrating.

    1. I have to give credit to another guy who blogged about a horrifically complicated system for representing power struggles using 4e powers, because without him overthinking the whole thing, I probably wouldn't have looked for an easier way to do it. I have a link somewhere but I honestly don't remember the guy's name.

I feel bad though, he worked really hard on it and after reading like six pages of creating factions and assigning XP values and powers, it seemed completely unusable. I owe a lot to his idea though... somebody has to do it the hard way before anyone can think of a better way to do it. :/
